About Us
Established in 1836, FURUSAWA SHUZO CO., LTD. is located in Sagae city of Yamagata prefecture.Sagae city is in a basin located at the side of the clear waters of the Sagae river with the sacred Mount Gassan of the Asahi mountain range in the west and Mount Zao of the Ou mountains with it’s famous ski resort in the east.Sagae city blesses us with abundant soft water called miyamizu said to be the best water to make Sake of Tohoku. This soft water brings a soft and bright taste of Sake, of which Sake brewing has been passed down in this area.Sagae city has four clear seasons; a cold and snowy winter, a flowery spring, a hot summer, and a fertile autumn.Rice and fruits are cultivated on a large scale.
The founder of our brewery used to be a safflower (benibana) and rice merchant utilizing the clear water of the Sagae river. We named our Daiginjo and Junmai Daiginjo Benibanaya Jubei after the founder, Jubei Furusawa. Our Sake is internationally certified as a Geographical Indication of Japan, known as GI Yamagata. Our basic policy is “Quality first”.We think the key to brewing delicious Sake is based on people, climate, and ingredients. This is exactly the principals of terroir. With that policy, we believe that we can spread the splendor of sake to more people by supplying high quality Sake brewed by Kurodo with passion, the Sake that also brings “relief, love and a light towards tomorrow” to the people. We make our high-quality Sake with inherited traditional skills polished for many years from our brewer’s passion for more than 180 years. We have been awarded an honor prize over three consecutive years in a National Sake fair.We manufacture and sell Sake, Honkaku Shochu and liquor.
